Murtaza moved from Mumbai, India, to New Zealand in July 2023 to study a Bachelor of Applied Management at AIC. Since then, his journey has taken him from adjusting to a new country and education system to graduating with distinction, receiving academic recognition and supporting other students as a Peer Tutor.
Before coming to New Zealand, Murtaza worked in India’s e-commerce industry, where he developed an interest in marketing, business operations, technology and data analytics. That experience influenced his decision to pursue further study in management.
Moving from the fast-paced environment of Mumbai to Auckland was a significant change, but Murtaza says the people and support around him helped make the transition easier.
“What I initially saw as just a place to study gradually became a community where I felt comfortable, supported and valued.”
He says lecturers and staff took an interest in both his academic progress and wider career aspirations, while friendships with students from different backgrounds helped him feel more connected to life in New Zealand.
Like many international students adjusting to a new environment, Murtaza faced challenges during his first year. Adapting to a different education system took time, and finding part-time employment proved more difficult than he initially expected.
He responded by becoming more organised, improving his time management and learning to ask for support when he needed it. Guidance from lecturers, classmates and the Level 8 Learning Support team helped him strengthen his academic skills and build confidence in his studies.
Once he secured employment, balancing work, assignments and other responsibilities brought another learning curve. By prioritising his commitments and staying consistent, Murtaza gradually found a routine that worked for him.
His progress was reflected in his results. He went on to receive multiple Top Scholar Awards, graduate with distinction, and receive a Special Award for Outstanding Achievement in Academics at graduation. He also secured stable employment.
One of the most meaningful developments in his AIC journey was becoming a Peer Tutor.
“I came here as an international student trying to find my own way, and today I have the opportunity to help other students navigate their journeys. That means a lot to me.”
Having now completed his Bachelor of Applied Management, Murtaza hopes to continue building his career in New Zealand, particularly in digital marketing, eCommerce, business operations or data analytics. Longer term, he hopes to progress into a strategic or leadership role where he can contribute to business growth and innovation.
His advice to current and prospective students is to make the most of the opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom.
“Don’t look at your studies as just a way to earn a qualification. Try to understand how what you’re learning applies to the real world.”
He also encourages students to ask questions, build relationships and make use of the support available through AIC, including Employability and Learning Support. For international students in particular, he believes patience, consistency and a willingness to seek support can make a meaningful difference when adjusting to study and life in a new country.
